April Showers Bring May Flowers

Today in Pre-K we began learning about seeds, plants and flowers.
We started with the book I Am A Seed
Our sand table is full of potting soil, so we can practice planting seeds and caring for plants.

Experiments

Our first science project will be to place bean seeds in "windows" so we can see our seeds change before our eyes.  We hope to see the roots come next.

Jayden prepared his bag for his beans.

And now we wait...

We talked about the stems of a plant and the very important job they have feeding the flower.  We compared it to a straw.  To show them how it works we placed carnations in water that we added food coloring to.
On day three, we see some signs of blue reaching the petals of the afternoon flower. It is very exciting!
Our beans are not very active yet.  Maybe monday we will see signs of germination.

Our class can now see the colors coming up the stems and into the petals of our flowers.  Wow.

The beans are beginning to show their roots.  It has been a slow process, but it is exciting just the same.

Did you know you can plant a potato and get a potato plant? Our newest experiment is one potato, two potato!  We planted one in a flower pot of soil and the second one in a bottle of water.  We are going to wait and see which one grows first. We do not have any predictions yet.
We have decided to plant seeds in a more traditional way also. We placed marigold seeds in little recycled yogurt cups filled with soil and placed them on the window sill in the sun. So we have seeds, soil, sunshine and we will water them as they need.
